Istanbul: Where History and Cultures Meet
We warmly invite you to Istanbul, an enchanting city where East and West unite. With its rich historical and cultural heritage spanning thousands of years, Istanbul is widely regarded as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is Turkey’s most populous city and serves as its cultural and financial hub.
Situated on both sides of the Bosphorus - a narrow strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara - the city bridges Asia and Europe, uniting two continents through its geography and culture. Istanbul’s international significance was further highlighted when it was named a European Capital of Culture in 2010.
Defined by the Bosphorus running through its heart, Istanbul embodies the meeting of continents and cultures - a dynamic intersection where Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Middle East converge.
Having served as the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, Istanbul holds immense historical significance. Its remarkable natural beauty and wealth of historical landmarks - including mosques, churches, synagogues, palaces, and vibrant bazaars - captivate visitors from around the globe. While embracing modernity, Istanbul remains proud of its past, confident in its present, and optimistic about its future. The city preserves its historical treasures while meeting the needs of 21st-century residents and visitors alike, ensuring a harmonious blend of the old and the new.
Climate & Clothing
Located in North Western Turkey, Istanbul experiences a mild Mediterranean climate.
During the conference in July, the weather will be warm and humid. Light, breathable summer clothing is recommended for daytime. Evenings are generally mild, but a thin cardigan or shawl may be useful in air-conditioned venues and public transport.
For the current weather forecast, please visit the Turkish State Meteorological Service.
Transportation in Istanbul
Transportation in Istanbul is conveniently provided via bus, ferry (vapur), taxi, minibus, subway (metro), and tram.
- Istanbulkart: This is the contactless smart card used for all public transport vehicles (bus, metro, tram, ferry, Marmaray) in the city. It can be easily purchased from vending machines at airports and major stations. Cash is not accepted on public transport.
- Metro & Tram: These are fast and reliable options, especially in the touristic areas and main arteries of the city. The T1 tram line (Bağcılar-Kabataş) is ideal for reaching key historical sites in the old city (Sultanahmet, Eminönü, Karaköy).
- Ferry (Vapur): The ferry system operates regularly between the European side (Eminönü, Beşiktaş, Karaköy) and the Asian side (Kadıköy, Üsküdar). Taking a ferry is a delightful alternative to visit the Asian side while enjoying the Bosphorus view.
- Buses: They offer an extensive network across the city. For route information and schedules, visit the IETT official website.
For the Istanbul rail map, visit the Metro Istanbul website.
