COURSE LISTINGS

Objectives:

The mathematics presents more then a collection of tools "unreasonably effective" (according to E. Wigner) for the natural sciences. It is also a playground where one can practice his or her curiosity or imagination, analytical and synthetical spirit and in a certain sense the rigor. Our program aims to form students having an intimate knowledge of basic mathematical concepts and tools and who are capable of following and producing elementary mathematical constructions (proofs, computations,...) and who can aptly express their mathematical ideas, in a written or oral form, with the necessary rigor and precision. Furthermore, students of the program are initiated to the "sister disciplines" that are the philosophy (logic), physical sciences and logic. Once the knowledge and skills necessary for autonomy are acquired, the program then offers to the student to deepen his or her knowledge by following advanced mathematical courses and/or to broaden his/her intellectual horizon by following come courses offered by other departments of the University. The choice of an important part of the second and fourth year courses have been left to the student with the purpose of furnishing the atmosphere of liberty which the student needs in order to realize his or her aptitudes. The natural openings of the program are the carrier track in academic life or in teaching, as wells as all fields where a knowledge of mathematics, capacity to rapidly adapt to abstract and complex tools and analytical skills (finance, actuary, bio-informatics) are required. In order to facilitate the passage to the professional life, the program proposes specialized courses. The program offers the possibility to make professional internships as well. Our wish is that the importance we give to the intellectual rigor in the study of mathematics will help our graduates to develop a critical and reasoned opinion on the world as well as a correct estimation of their own capacities and limitations. The medium of teaching is french with a selection of courses delivered in turkish and in english..

A graduate of the program:

1) understands the principles of deductive reasoning; has systematically probed into the relevance and exactness of mathematical statement met or produced;
2) can properly state and use concepts and results of major mathematical interest;
3) can switch from one to the other viewpoints on mathematical objects (pictures, formulae, precise statements, heuristics, list of examples,...) and can express his or her mathematical ideas in an articulate way, both in a written and oral form;
4) masters common computation techniques and algorithms; has a good agility in their use;
5) can identify the relevant tools, among those that were taught, needed to solve a problem and is able to judge whether or not he is in possession of these tools;
6) has followed a guided learning strategy in autonomy; has pursued steps toward the resolution of an unfamiliar problem;
7) has a theoretical and practical knowledge in computer science suitable to pursue the learning of a programming language;
8) has been introduced to some mathematical or non-mathematical disciplines in an atmosphere of liberty;
9) has investigated the relevance of modelling and using mathematical tools in positive sciences and in the professional life;
10) masters French language as well as another foreign language, to a level sufficient to study or work abroad.
